The Data Management Plan (DMP) is a methodological document that describes the life cycle of the data collected, generated and processed during a research project, a doctoral thesis, etc.
- Good data management practices aren’t just for grants. They are a gift to your future self.
- Save you time.
- Ensure integrity and reproducibility of data.
- Disseminate and preserve the data.
- Avoid possible loss of data.
- Validate the results.
- Ensure a wider dissemination and increase the impact.
- Publish data, code, and workflows => get more citations.
- Know where your data is in 5 years, so you can re-use or refer to it in your next study.
What information must a Data Management Plan have?
It must contain information about:
- What data will be obtained to develop research.
- How they will be collected and processed.
- Which standards and what methodology will be followed.
- Who will be able to access the data.
- How they will be preserved when the search is complete.
How to prepare a DMP or describe the data that will be collected or generated in the project memory?
You have the free tool CORA.eiNa DMP with templates adapted to the requirements of each funding body (Horizon Europe, ERC, State Plan) and the type of research you carry out (research project, doctoral thesis, etc.).
The tool allows you to save, edit and export your DMP, work collaboratively with other researchers and update it during the different phases of your search. Contains help and examples in all sections.
💡 Tip: How to use ICAC’s templates at CORA.eiNa DMP?
When applying for a project, if you need to include information about the Data Management Plan, use this guide with recommendations for FAIR data management.
To create a DMP you can also refer to the guides available at Recercat.
When should the DMP be ready?
For EU projects under Horizon Europe, initial version of the DMP is required as deliverable; normally by month 6.
The DMP is considered ‘a living document’ and has to be regularly updated to reflect changes that may arise or decisions that are implemented. For projects longer than 12 months, an updated version of the DMP has to be submitted as a deliverable.
A final version of the DMP that describes how the data is managed and shared has to be delivered at the end of the project.
